Mandel was born on November 10, 1954, in Montreal, Canada. He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1978 with a B.A. in theater arts and then went on to attend the Atlantic Theater Company in New York City.

From there, he landed his first starring role on St. Elsewhere as Dr. Howard Mittleman between 1980 and 1982. This led to roles on TV’s Mr. Show with Bob and David and The Simpsons where he served as the voice of Lionel Hutz for fourteen years before taking over hosting duties for Deal or No Deal in 2009. As if that’s not enough, he has also starred in films like “Truly Madly Deeply” and “Spanglish.”

Mandel began his career in stand-up comedy in Boston where he became a staple at the Comedy Connection. He was later recruited to be part of the cast of “St. Elsewhere.” In 1985, he won an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” for playing John Winger on the show. His film roles include “Fargo,” “The Simpsons,” “Mr. Show with Bob and David,” and more. Howie Mandel has been involved in numerous television shows and movies over the past few decades.

Howie Mandel’s Personal Life

Mandel has been married to British comedian Joy Behar since 1997. The couple has one son, Oliver Mandel. The comedian has won eight Daytime Emmy Awards and is also a three-time recipient of the Peabody Award. In 2006, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President George W. Bush at the White House in Washington D.C. 

An accomplished magician, he performed his first magic act on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1965 and still performs magic tricks throughout his performances today. As of 2010, Mandel became an American citizen after living in Canada in 1967.

Howie Mandel had a tough childhood. His father died when Howie was only fifteen years old, and he had to quit high school to work to help his mother make ends meet. He later was able to attend college at the University of Pittsburgh where he graduated in three years with a degree in psychology.

Howie Mandel is the youngest of nine children.

He was first introduced to acting at age six when he performed with his older sibling in a school production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

Mandel has stated that if he wasn’t an actor, he’d be either a painter or a writer.

His father died when Mandel was five years old and his mother was charged with murder in his father’s death. His mother was found not guilty in court. 

The Emmy award-winning actor is known for playing the role of Dr. Howard Kremer on NBC’s “St. Elsewhere.”
